Yesterday afternoon, the Langley Centre was full of the sound of chatter and laughter.
What was causing all this noise?
A new batch of student volunteers from UWE had met North Bristol residents eager for help and support at the start of the next series of Connect <> Lockleaze’s 1-2-1 sessions.
Eight people turned up eager to learn and to use the computers and internet.
Five student volunteers were available to help so some had to share a student.
Fortunately Jo Earl, our UWE Project Officer, and Steve Vince, our University Partnership Officer from Hewlett-Packard, were on hand to offer some additional assistance!
It didn’t take long for the session to get going – everyone wanting to do something different: adding attachments to emails; using street view; learning how to make onigri (Japanese rice balls!); making a job application and even catching up on some football match he had missed
... the benefit of these 1-2-1 sessions being that everyone can do just what they want to do and, perhaps more importantly, they can do it at their own pace.
The two hours flew by and everyone agreed they would look forward to returning next week. Asking the student volunteers how they found it, they all agreed it was “a great experience, really rewarding”.
After the session, Steve Vince said “It was great to see so many people from the Lockleaze community taking part and of course fantastic to see a number of UWE student volunteers willing to give up their time to help in the community. I hope the course continues, the way it started!”
